After our stop at the Altare Della Patria, we picked a direction at random and started walking. We stuck mostly to side streets and alleyways to avoid some late night crowds, until we got caught up in the flow at the Temple of Hadrian.
Moving with the flow of foot traffic, we came upon The Pantheon and didn't realize it at the time. One half of the entrance was covered in scaffolding, and the facade wad darker than I imagined. The inscription looked like plant on letters. We'd be back the next day to have a proper look. Our path led to the Piazza Novana where the crowd was thick and there was a Miss Roma 2010 stage set up. While we were there a comedian was running through a list of impersonations that didn't register.
We were on a roll, so I suggested we try to find Trevi Fountain. Unfortunately, my sense of direction was thoroughly scrambled by now, and we left the square headed in the opposite direction. Instead, we came upon the Tiber River and a stunning view of Castel Sant'Angelo.
Happy with our discoveries for the night, we headed back into the city to find a place to eat.Next up, our first meal in Italy.
